  • The Gulf crisis has highlighted a serious weakness in Australia’s economy — an almost complete reliance on foreign-flagged shipping. While efficient in normal times, this leaves Australia exposed during major disruptions, with no sovereign shipping capacity to guarantee essential fuel, freight and defence supply lines.
  • With limited fuel reserves and vast distance from suppliers, even short-term trade interruptions could trigger shortages, stall industry and impact national security. The Australian International Shipping Register was created in 2012 to address this risk, but more than a decade later it has failed to deliver the maritime resilience Australia urgently needs.
